Melbourne in Winter: Four Brilliant Reasons to Take Your Group South This Season

Melbourne has always had a way with winter. While Sydney retreats indoors, Melbourne leans into the cold — warming up its galleries, filling its restaurants, and putting on some of the most impressive cultural events in the country. For a Probus group or senior social club looking for a tour that feels genuinely special, a winter trip to Melbourne and the Yarra Valley might just be the best option on the calendar right now.

At Alura Coaches, we run a popular 4 Day Melbourne Tour that takes in the very best of the city in comfort, with your group travelling together by coach from Sydney. This winter, there are four events that make the case for a Melbourne trip especially compelling — whether you're joining one of our set tours or planning a custom group itinerary.

Yarra Valley Fireside — Winter Wine Festival

Where: Wineries and cellar doors across the Yarra Valley, VIC

When: 12–27 June 2026

More info: wineyarravalley.com.au

Just over an hour from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley is one of Victoria's most beautiful wine regions — and in mid-June it puts on its best winter face with 15 days of fireside dining, cellar door tastings, long lunches, smoky feasts and all-star culinary collaborations across the region's finest wineries.

The Yarra Valley Fireside is the Yarra Valley's annual winter wine festival — a relaxed, indulgent celebration of the region's exceptional cool-climate wines, particularly its world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Participating venues run everything from intimate winemaker dinners to casual cellar door afternoons with roaring fires and warming food, and the closing weekend Wine Trail through Healesville is a highlight of the season.

The setting alone is worth the journey. Rolling vineyards, mountain backdrops, frost on the vines in the morning and a glass of something exceptional in hand by lunchtime. Best of all — when you travel with Alura, the driving is on us, so everyone in the group can enjoy the wine.

The Yarra Valley sits beautifully at the start or end of our 4 Day Melbourne Tour, or works as a standalone day trip from the city. Talk to our team about building it into your itinerary.

Lightscape — Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne

Where: Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne, Birdwood Avenue

When: 12 June – 2 August 2026 (Wednesday–Sunday + daily during school holidays)

Tickets: From $36 adult | $32 concession | Book at rbg.vic.gov.au

Now a Melbourne winter institution and a back-to-back Gold winner at the Victorian Tourism Awards, Lightscape is simply one of the most beautiful group evening experiences available in Australia.

After dark, the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne are transformed by a 2.1-kilometre trail of large-scale light installations, immersive soundscapes and glowing pathways created by leading Australian and international artists. This year brings an entirely new trail with 15 new and returning installations — so even those who've visited in previous years will find it fresh and surprising. Mulled wine and hot chocolate are available along the trail, making it a genuinely warming winter evening.

For a senior group, Lightscape is the kind of experience that people talk about long after they get home. It's leisurely, accessible, visually spectacular, and works beautifully as an evening outing built around a Melbourne dinner beforehand. Tickets are timed — sessions start from 5.15pm — so it's easy to plan around.

Lightscape is included in our 4 Day Melbourne Tour, or we can build it into a custom Melbourne group trip. Get in touch to find out more.

Open House Melbourne 2026

Where: 200+ buildings across Melbourne CBD and suburbs

When: 24–26 July 2026

Theme: "Generous City"

More info: openhousemelbourne.org

Every year on the last weekend of July, Open House Melbourne throws open the doors of nearly 200 of the city's most architecturally and historically significant buildings — most of them free, many of them normally closed to the public.

This year's theme is "Generous City" — an invitation to explore how Melbourne's built environment reflects a culture of openness, community and inclusion. From heritage landmarks and hidden laneways to brand-new civic structures and private residences, the weekend program spans the full breadth of Melbourne's architectural story. Past favourites like the Myer Mural Hall, the Athenaeum Library and historic city substations sit alongside contemporary surprises that only Open House can unlock.

For a group with an interest in design, history, heritage or simply the hidden side of one of Australia's great cities, this is an unmissable weekend. Most events are free, with a small number of special tours ticketed at around $7. The city is alive and buzzing across the three days — perfect for exploring on foot between buildings, with a long lunch worked in somewhere along the way.

Open House Melbourne falls perfectly within the window for a July Melbourne group tour. Contact our team to discuss a tailored Melbourne itinerary around this event.

Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF)

Where: ACMI, The Capitol, Kino and venues across Melbourne CBD

When: 6–23 August 2026 (74th annual festival)

Tickets & program: miff.com.au

Founded in 1952, the Melbourne International Film Festival is one of the world's oldest and Australia's most beloved film festivals — three weeks of exceptional cinema spanning over 275 features, documentaries, short films and immersive screen experiences from across the globe.

The 74th MIFF runs across iconic Melbourne venues including ACMI, The Capitol, Kino and Hoyts Melbourne Central, with screenings across the city from 6 to 23 August. The program swings from arthouse gems and international award-winners to bold Australian voices and crowd-pleasing world premieres — and there is genuinely something for every taste, even among groups who don't think of themselves as film festival types.

MIFF passes and individual tickets are available through the festival website. For a group of film lovers, a Melbourne trip timed around MIFF is a truly memorable experience — the atmosphere across the city during the festival is electric, and the quality of what's on screen is consistently extraordinary.

August is a wonderful time to be in Melbourne, and MIFF gives a coach tour from Sydney a real sense of occasion. Browse the full program and plan your sessions at miff.com.au, and talk to us about an August Melbourne itinerary for your group.
