The Archibald, Wynne & Sulman Prizes 2026

There are few Australian art events as beloved — or as reliably debated — as the Archibald Prize. Now in its 105th year, the Archibald is Australia's most prestigious portraiture award, and the 2026 exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW brings together 59 finalist works alongside the Wynne Prize landscapes and Sulman Prize subject paintings.
Whether your group has strong opinions on who should have won or simply loves being in the presence of great Australian art, this is one of Sydney's unmissable winter events. The free guided tours are a particular highlight for groups — a knowledgeable guide brings the works to life in a way that's genuinely entertaining and accessible.
Running until mid-August, there's plenty of time to plan. The Art Gallery of NSW is also beautifully located for a group lunch in the Domain or a wander through the Royal Botanic Garden afterwards.
Salon des Refusés 2026

For many Sydney arts lovers, the Salon des Refusés is the highlight of the Archibald season — sometimes even more so than the official show. Held each year at the charming S.H. Ervin Gallery on Observatory Hill, it showcases works entered into the Archibald and Wynne Prizes that weren't selected for the official exhibition.
The quality is often remarkable. As The Guardian put it this year, there are "so many portraits that could be swapped into either exhibition without anyone batting an eyelid." This year's selection includes works by Julian Meagher, Alexander McKenzie, Wendy Sharpe and many others — and there's a People's Choice Award your group can vote in.
At just $12 concession, it's excellent value and a perfect companion piece to the official Archibald. The gallery itself — a historic National Trust property perched above the harbour — is a lovely destination in its own right.
World Press Photo Exhibition 2026
Where: State Library of NSW, 1 Shakespeare Place, Sydney When: 6 June – 19 July 2026 Cost: Free
Every year, the World Press Photo Exhibition brings the most powerful photojournalism from around the world to Sydney — and it is always one of the most moving cultural experiences the city offers.
The 2026 exhibition presents 42 awarded photographers whose work was selected from over 57,000 entries across 141 countries. These are images that capture the defining moments and quiet human stories of the past year — from conflict zones to courthouses to communities rarely seen in mainstream media. Entry is completely free.
A word of note: some images are confronting by nature, and the exhibition carries an advisory for sensitive viewers. But for groups who appreciate powerful visual storytelling, this is genuinely unmissable. The State Library of NSW is also a beautiful building worth exploring in its own right.
Making a Full Day of It
